Perspex, Plexiglass "Perspex" or otherwise known as "Acrylic" is well known for its crystal clarity, impact resistance and excellent weather ability. Acrylics have been used extensively for many applications since the material was first invented in 1927 by Rohn & Haas A. G.

Cast acrylic sheet is manufactured by pouring liquid monomer into a mould, resulting in superior optical clarity, better chemical resistance, and easier polishing compared to extruded acrylic. It is the preferred choice for applications demanding the highest quality finish.

Chemical Resistance

Acrylics are unaffected by most household detergents, cleaning agents, and solutions of inorganic acids, alkalies, and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Acrylics should not be used with chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons, esters and ketones.

Fabrication & Processing

Cast acrylic can be easily cut, drilled, routed, laser cut, polished, and thermoformed. It machines cleanly without chipping and produces an excellent flame-polished edge. For best results when bonding, use solvent-based acrylic cement (e.g. Acrifix) to create strong, invisible joints.

Saw cutting — use fine-tooth TCT blades with consistent feed rate
Laser cutting — produces clean, polished edges in one pass
CNC routing — ideal for complex shapes and cut-outs
Flame polishing — restores crystal clarity on cut edges
Thermoforming — heat to 160–170°C for bending and shaping
Bonding — use solvent cement for optically clear joints

Care & Maintenance

Clean acrylic with a soft cloth and mild soapy water. Avoid abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, or ammonia-based products. For scratches, use a plastic polish compound. Always remove the protective film before prolonged outdoor exposure to prevent adhesion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between cast and extruded acrylic?+
Cast acrylic is produced by pouring liquid monomer into moulds, resulting in superior optical clarity, better scratch resistance, and easier polishing. Extruded acrylic is pushed through rollers and is more uniform in thickness but has slightly lower optical quality. Cast is preferred for displays, signage, and architectural applications.
Can acrylic be used outdoors?+
Yes. Cast acrylic has excellent UV resistance and will not yellow or become brittle even after years of outdoor exposure. It is one of the few plastics suitable for long-term exterior applications without UV-stabilisation additives.
How does acrylic compare to glass?+
Acrylic is 10–17 times more impact resistant than glass, weighs approximately half as much, and transmits more light (92% vs ~90%). However, it has a lower scratch resistance and lower maximum service temperature than glass.
Can I laser cut acrylic sheet?+
Yes. Cast acrylic is ideal for laser cutting — it produces clean, flame-polished edges directly from the laser. Extruded acrylic can also be laser cut but tends to produce a slightly frostier edge finish.
